We only had one night here for work so was a swift visit. There was a separate small building used as a leaders room and thunderbox toilets were constructed on the camping field. Grobbendonk was a wild camping ground where trees could be cut, holes dug and with water features where pioneering failures would result in a dunking. The British Army returned the land to the Belgian government in the early s and a similar zero cost usage agreement was reached for continuing the camping facility by Benelux District.
The camp site badge was a mosquito with a proboscis dripping blood. The army had no budget to assist in this work and an estimated cost of 85, euros was way beyond the means of the Benelux District and so it was decided to abandon the Alice Springs building. We may still use the land for camping, but without water, toilets and shelter for our younger members, this is not practical.

The Bouwelse Bergen Bouwel Mountains are made of m high and m wide dunes, remains of a once long dune row linking Nijlen to Kasterlee. Some of these dunes date back from the Age of Iron but most of them were formed in the Middle Ages, following local agricultural practices. The farmers first cut the trees and the shrubs from the moor; then they picked up the plaggen , that is grassy sods constituting the humus layer of the moor. The plaggen were stored in the stables and later spread as a fertilizer on the poor fields.

After centuries of sod spreading, the elevation of the fields increased by cm. The fertilization formed a layer of black humus locally known as plaggendek and called by pedologists "deep anthropogenic humus A-horizon". The parts of the moor where sod was not removed were used as a pasture for sheep. Accordingly, vegetation disappeared from large areas, on which sand was deposited by wind gusts, forming a row of dunes in the border of the cultivated fields.
