What is the circular economy? A circular economy is an economic model which aims at keeping the added value of products for as long as possible in the economic value chain and seeks to minimise residual waste. This means that resources stay longer within the economy, and when a given product has reached the end of its life, it can be productively used again.

    Enjoy our streamlined, time-efficient approach

Why a circular economy? Global competition for resources is increasing while the concentration of supply of resources, particularity critical raw materials outside the EU, is making our industry and society dependent on imports and vulnerable to high prices, market volatility and political situation in supplying countries. Transition to a more circular economy will increase resource independence and, if accompanied by increased efficiency, it can promote competitiveness.

This however requires changes throughout value chains, from extraction processes, material and product design and production processes to new business and market models, from new ways of turning waste into a resource to new modes of consumer behaviour. This implies also a need for innovation and investment not only in technologies, but also in organisation, society, finance methods and policies.

Despite its potential to help tackle some of todays global societal challenges such as climate change, dwindling fossil fuel resources and the need to switch to more sustainable and resource-efficient industrial processes, many hurdles to industrial biotechnology persist. These include:. The aim of the Congress is to support the exchange of knowledge about the bio-economy in the non-food sector and to contribute to the establishment of a sustainable use of raw materials.

Presentations will be made on successful bottomup concepts and current findings from research and practice concerning new green routes, biorefining and cascading use for special biomasses, biosubstrates and biomaterials. Companies will present eco-innovative product development. With this seminar, we aim to provide the European Commission and other EU stakeholders with relevant input for the new and more ambitious proposal. When the communication on circular economy was withdrawn, vice-president Timmermans promised that it will be replaced by a more ambitious proposal late Therefore we would like to explore with you the possibilities and opinions regarding a more ambitious and integral approach towards the circular economy.

In our view, circular economy should not only focus on zero-waste and recycling, but should encompass a whole value chain approach including the biobased economy. By bringing together the best practical, regional and local experiences, we want to showcase the applications of the circular economy and its short- and long-term effects. To register for the seminar, please send an e-mail to hnp nl-prov. For any further questions regarding this seminar, please contact hnp nl-prov. Building new low-carbon, resource-efficient and sustainable value chains based on agricultural and forestry biomass to produce biochemicals, biomaterials and bioenergy will contribute to the diversification of rural economy and the reinforcement of the industrial base creating rural growth and employment, and will help to meet energy and climate policy targets for Indeed, bio-based products can have a lower environmental and climate footprint than products based on non-renewable raw materials.

As far as possible, participants with practical experience have been invited. A one day event focusing on the implementation of safer, greener and more sustainable solvents into industry. The focus will be on entire value chains and not single sectors in order to foster integrated processes on the way to an inclusive biobased economy.

Wann: The event is aimed at raising awareness on the potential of Bioeconomy in delivering regional, national and European sustainable growth and jobs objectives. It is targeted at supporting the definition of coherent regional bioeconomy strategies by launching a debate among Regions and EU Stakeholders about how such strategies can help reaching European sustainability and development targets and how this can boost growth and jobs.
