The Gothic church of Notre-Dame was built in on the foundations of the chapel of Saint Amalberga Since the 13th century, a pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Amalberga has been leading pilgrims to Temse. Inside the church, a tomb was erected for this saint in In the right transept another tomb dating from the 16th century is formed from two recumbent figures, one of them the knight Lefever, benefactor of Temse. A communion rail, Baroque wooden panelling and several pieces in wrought metal from the 18th century, works of the local sculptors Adriaan and Philip Nys, give the Church of Our Lady an appearance of tranquil strength and of reverence.
The dome-shaped bell tower of the church is visible from the other bank of the Scheldt River. The church and the tower of the town hall make Temse one of the most beautiful small cities in the region. At night the church is fully illuminated. This gives a note of enchantment to the whole.

Godfrey and his wife Mathilda of Saxony built a keep surrounded by a walled castrum, which protected the trade settlement. Their son Herman of Verdun, count of Brabant, founded the church of Saint Laurentius shortly before the year Herman showed his loyalty to the Ottonian emperor both with the architectural concept of the building, which had an eastern and a western choir, and with the choice of the patron saint.
The Ottonian emperors had a special veneration for St Laurence because on 10 August , the saint's feast day, Otto I won the Battle of Lechfeld against the Hungarians that had been regularly plundering Europe. At that moment Otto was the King of East Francia and after the victory the German lords raised him on their shields to celebrate his triumph and proclaimed him emperor.

Another older structure, the 14th-century Cloth Hall, was retained and now forms a sort of extension at the back of the Town Hall proper.
The Oudenaarde Town Hall was a late flowering of secular Brabantine Gothic architecture, carrying on the stylistic tradition of the town halls at Leuven, Brussels, and Middelburg. Above the ground-story arcade with vaulted ceiling, the building displays typical features of its regional forerunners: a richly decorated facade with pointed-arch windows separated by canopied niches, and a steep, dormered roof surrounded by an openwork parapet.

Source: PMRMaeyaert. Oudenaarde is a Belgian municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. From the 15th to the 18th century, but especially in the 16th century, Oudenaarde was a world-known centre of tapestry production. Oudenaarde was celebrated in times gone by for its manufacturing of tapestries and its goldsmithing workshops. Oudenaarde is also the homeland of the illuminator Tavernier 15th century and of the painter Adriaan Brouwer 17th century.
The collegial church of Saint Walburga has fourteen chapels, one of which is consecrated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of weavers. The folder and the plan of the church indicate the location of the paintings, the tapestries, the retables, the stained glass windows, the tombstones, etc.
The church has always been richly furnished, but unfortunately it was completely pillaged in The altars and the furnishings are therefore from a later date. At the beginning of , the altar, the lectern and the organ in the choir were replaced. Currently in the winter only the choir of the church is used to say mass. It is for this reason that the choir is separated from the central nave by a tall wall of glass.
The church consists of two half-churches combined, recognisable from the use of different materials. From the older church, dating from the 12th century, there remains the central choir and the two lateral naves. Then the builders started to construct a new church beside the old one, but in it was decided to incorporate the old church in the new one. In , the tower was completed. But in a lightning strike destroyed the spire of the tower; unfortunately it has not been rebuilt since.
The church was built around and probably consisted of one nave constructed in stone from Tournai, which is typical of the region. This church next to the Scheldt is an important example of the late-Romanesque church architecture of West-Vlaanderen West-Flanders. Certain parts from this original construction still remain, such as the crossing tower without the top floor , a part of the southern wall of the nave and a part of the southern wall of the rectangular choir. In the 13th century a northern transept was constructed which expanded the choir extensively.

Most likely, the southern transept also dates back to this century. In the church was further extended with one bay westward. On the north side, a small baptistry was added and on the south side, a staircase and a sacristy. A relief by the hand of Charles Lateur can be found underneath a small roof. The pulpit and the communion in Renaissance style date back to There are also two bluestone altars in a neo-Gothic style.
The Plague Cross and the Assumption altarpiece originally came from the neighbourhood Rugge. Recently, the tower was restored and the altar area was refurbished. The altar now stands more in the middle, closer to the community. The original cemetery gate cemetery has been replaced by a stained glass window designed by Mieke Verwaetermeulen, a glass artist from De Pinte.
