Must see if you are visiting Antwerp. When entering you receive an audio device with the language of your choice.
Half of the signs are not in English but you are still able to learn a lot about this camp and the conditions of its prisoners.
Wherever there is an audio stop you received very detailed information about that site. It took me 2 hours to go through listening to all the audio stops. Very well preserved. It's like you are going back in time! This was a really impressive visit. The feeling you get when visiting this place is almost indescribable. You feel the cold and the moisture and you can really Imagine how it could be in those dark days with no hope and only sorrow.
Never been so much confronted with the pain that a war can cause. This really feels real. You can visit a lot museums about war but this one really get you the feeling how horrible it has been. Altough im Belgian and interested in the cruelty of the concentration camps of the Nazi's i never visited this camp. So on a Sunny day i went there and i have to say i was surprised in a good way.
The original fort is build before world war 1 but shows mostly the horror of the world war 2 and it was horror. Not as big as Auswhitz or Birkenau but not less sadistic. Here they killed in a more horrible way.. The audio guide is a perfect way to follow the way trough and outside the camp. Stories of survivors are told and there are also information boards on the way. The visit is between 2 and 3 hrs and really interesting. A place that can never be forgotten because so many people gave their lives for Belgium.
Theres a free parking next to the fort and a restaurant too. A must visit. Although it seems a little unreal this old fort was indeed used as a concentration camp during World War II. Free parking at the front of the fort, 11 euros entry fee per person. Having never visited such a place ever before I was a little unsure as to how I would feel knowing a little of the history of this building.
Even as you approach the entrance the two guard boxes begin to bring home the reality to you. In the reception you are given audio tours to listen to as you go around. You type the number of the corresponding item you are looking at into the audio monitor and listen to the information. I would not necessarily say that this is a place you would want to take small children. The information and artefacts are Interesting and sometimes unreal to believe. True stories about the people who ran this place do certainly leave an impression on your mind.
A must visit if you are in the area, leave around 2 hours for a visit as the tour takes you right the way around the fort. These places and the people they affected need to be remembered to stop anything like it ever happening again. This is a very interesting place to visit, the only reason I have rated 4 instead of 5 as it doesn't seem appropriate to say excellent as this was a concentration camp.
Parking is free outside and entry was 11 euros per adult. We were given an audio guide in English which corresponds to numbers throughout the fort. Most information boards do not have English explanations, it is in Flemish and French.

The stories that you hear are truly awful and the whole ambience of the place is sombre. There were a few senior schools visiting whilst we were there, and I would say that this is not suitable for young children.

The visit is very well organised so that you follow a route around the whole fort. If you listen to everything on the audio sets and visit every area you will need to allow at least 2 and a half hours. It is recommended when you arrive for 2 hours. This is definitely an eye opener and worth visiting if you are in the area.
